Well David Hindes has spent some of his gathering old pallets and scrap wood to build a very fine shed. Apart from some shiny new screws everything else- in the true spirit of allotmenteering- is made from recycled material. Dismantling pallets is no easy task and neither is constructing a shed made from innumerable carefully constructed panels. The pent roof is now so strong that Dave was able to walk on it to lay the roofing felt. The interior is now wired for sound and the ventilation system is in fine working order. It's a pleasure to see such a fine, yet modest construction.

Art Allot

Starting in August and continuing through autumn, Boundary Way Allotments will be the venue for a new art initiative; Art Allot. As we know T&M are at the bespoke end of the seed market and they have a very wide range. It will be interesting to see what the catalogues contain. There is only one hitch they need an order of £100 to get a good discount but I’m sure that, if the price is right, we can get some orders.
Incidentally, I know that there is informal seed sharing going on (between consenting adults of course) but it may be worth while letting members know if you are willing to take part in this cost saving, environmentally friendly activity. I certainly don't remember gardening being part of his Palladium performances. But I got an inkling of what the combination might have been by watching Derrick Higgott's slide presentation at the Penn & District Gardening Society's meeting at the Bradmore Community Centre yesterday.

Derrick, with the support of his partner David, has developed the site of an old pig farm into a stunning garden. The enterprise has taken thirty years and Derrick has brought all his talents as a professional horticulturist into play. There are few straight lines to be found but many niches filled with hidden delights. The effects he has achieved show his ability to choose appropriate plants and garden features but also to allow nature to provide a few suprises on her own. He seems to get on well with Nature and with his neighbours. His ability to bring characters like "Golden Shoes" into the story and relate over-the-garden-wall conversations is a real treat. Even if you are not interested in gardening you can spend a very entertaining hour listening to him.

I didn't mention his photographs; they are excellent. We are used to beautiful photography from the likes of the BBC, but those who have tried, know that it is not as easy as it looks. Too often amateur efforts leave a lot to be desired, but Derrick has a good eye for composition, perspective and control of colour. The audience were all enthused by his photos and infectious humour.

The Secret Garden is no secret any more. It can be found in the village of Little Haywood on Back Lane. It is usually open on Fridays in the season and details can be found in the slim Yellow Book under entry 56. There may well be a society visit, so watch out for details.

Where to Find Us

View Boundary Way Allotments and Community Garden in a larger map

The Boundary Way Allotments and Community Garden are on Boundary Way, Wolverhampton WV4 4NT
(adjacent to Highfields Science Specialist School.)

We'd like to thank:

Highfields Science Specialist School
Springdale School
Uplands School
Wolverhampton City Council Leisure Services
Wolverhampton Network Consortium
Merry Hill and Penn Partnership
Big Lottery BBC "Breathing Places"
Wolverhampton Fire Service
Heantun Housing Ltd
Wolverhampton College- Cedars Horticultural Unit
Wildside Activity Centre Volunteers
Wildlife Trust for Birmingham and the Black Country
RSPB
Beacon Centre for the Blind
Warstones Library
Penn Gardening Society
Three Pines Construction
Ground Designs

Cummunity Garden History

In 1999 Bryon Aston with European funding and support from the Wolverhampton Network Consortium (WNC) made plans for dis-used plots at the top of the Boundary Way Allotments. A road way was constructed to the new garden.
Tina Davies, Heantun Housing Ltd., was seconded as project officer through WNC. In 2002 Sally Wicks joined the team and established the Wilderness Garden. A wooden hut and a polytunnel were erected, a pond with decking was added and the orchard and woodland planted.
In 2004 sadly, fire destroyed most of the wooden hut! However, Highfields School built an Environment Centre adjacent to the allotments and the school began to work closely with Boundary Way Allotment Association (BWAA), bringing local children to the garden.
In 2006 a successful application was made to the Big Lottery for a Breathing Places grant. Also, with the help of the Wolverhampton City Council's Small Grant, the Storytelling Circle, composting station and Sensory Garden were constructed.
David Bellamy visited our Open Day in October 2008 and we were invited to bid for more Breathing Places funding. This was used to build the bird hide, benches for the poly tunnel and trail posts. At the same time the wild flower bank was created.
On a very wet day in June, the second Open Day was organised and- despite the weather- attendance was very good. Our MP for South West Wolverhampton Rob Marris came along to support us and there were lots of activities to engage the interest of young and old.

Open Day 2009

On a very wet day in June, the second Open Day was organised and- despite the weather- attendance was very good.
